Monday evenings the ladies of the church come together to hear interesting talks from guest speakers, enjoy chatting over the issues of the day and make new friendships, that’s why it’s called Ladies Friendships.

Returning on 4th October, Ladies Friendship meets on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month, in the Church from 7.45pm.

Anne is currently a BMS partner in Tunisia and she will be taking part in various events over the weekend, and talking about her work for the BMS.

On Friday evening, she will be visit the youth work at the church and then Saturday morning there will be a coffee morning, with cakes and a bring and buy sale with, at 12 noon, a presentation of her life in Tunisia.

Anne will then lead the service at Caversham Park Church and will be interviewed by Jonathan Langley at Caversham Baptist Church during the evening worship at 6pm.

So, once again the men of the church will be joining with thousands of other men around the world as part of the Baptist Men’s Bigger Breakfast.

The breakfast will cost £5.00 and a splendid time is guaranteed for all.

Come and enjoy a great breakfast with good company.

It’s a chance to reminisce about the old times, meet old friends and make new ones, all while singing your favourite hymns. There will be an opportunity for you to choose your favourite hymn and to tell us why that hymn inspires you. A chance to hear what inspired the hymn writers and how these hymns have changed the lives of the people who live in Caversham. 

Hymn Cafe starts at 3.45pm and finishes at 5pm. 

So if you like a piece of cake, enjoy a natter over a cup of tea and a good old sing to some of those great old tunes, then Hymn Cafe is the place to be.

We meet at South Street every third sunday of the month at 3.45pm.

The CCA drop-in is there to help you and to provide you with the right services you need whatever your financial circumstances.

So from Midday until 2pm, drop in to the church and we will be glad to help you.

On Bank Holiday Sunday we baptized three people who wanted to declare their faith in Jesus Christ.

This involves being sent backwards under water and then brought back up again. It all seems rather bizarre! Why not just give them a handshake and a certificate?

The reason is because baptism is symbolic of a number of things. If it was only a declaration of faith then a handshake would probably do (actually in our church it’s more likely to be a hug!) However, there are at least two things in the ritual which are important. Firstly, we use water to represent the truth that Jesus, through His death, has cleansed us of all our guilt. Whatever a person may have done, Jesus has taken the punishment on the cross and they are declared ‘not guilty’. (It could be argued that this means we can do as much evil as we like because Jesus will forgive us. However no real Christian thinks like that. Anyone thinking like that has not really appreciated what Jesus has done and is probably a phoney).

Secondly the motion of going under the water and being brought back declares death and resurrection. It says that we believe that Jesus died as a punishment for our guilt and then was raised to declare that He had done it and we can be forgiven. Because He rose from the dead, all who belong to Him will be raised from the dead too. 1 Corinthians 15 promises that the day will come when Jesus raises His people, gives them new bodies and then we will live with Him forever.

Revelation 21: 1-7 speaks about the good things which we can look forward to. However the next verse warns that, for those who refuse Jesus, there is only eternal punishment. Jesus has made it possible for us to have eternal life, but He is the only one who can give this.

We are an all age church stepping out in faith and working together, to bring the good news of God’s love to the people of Caversham. We hope to have something to offer every member of the family, from the new born baby to those who may not be as agile as they once were.

We have two premises, Our South Street building is the main church for all our activites and worship, we also have a daughter church in Kidmore Road where we meet most Sunday evenings.

1 Identification with Christ
Key Verse: Buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God. Colossians 2: 12
Jesus was baptized – John was reticent (was this baptism necessary?) However God approved – Our baptism is identification not only with Jesus’ water baptism but also His baptism of death and resurrection (Matt 20:22).

These are the main truths which Christians believe:

• Human sin, God’s standard of perfect righteousness, the prospect of judgement
• The work of Jesus on the cross
• Our response of faith

2 Revolutionary New Start
Key Verse: For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. Galatians 3: 27
Baptism represents: Death to the old life – resurrection to new life – holiness – grace when we fail – belonging to each other.

Although we may feel the same and much has not changed (for example, we still look alike, we still like chocolate and don’t like spinach!) God sees us in a completely new way. We are no longer outside His kingdom, but are now His children. We are Christians because of what Jesus has done and, when we fail, God will forgive us. We have been saved through faith and nothing else. God accepts us as we are but He loves us too much to leave us like this! We now have a responsibility to change the way we live. This is not living by ‘dos and don’ts’ but rather a case of allowing God to change us.

3 Cleansing From The Past
Key Verse: You were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God 1 Corinthians 6:11
Whatever we have done, whatever we have been like, God has forgiven us because of Jesus. Baptism is a seal of this.

A. People who now follow Jesus have done all sorts of evil in their past;
B. Jesus has WASHED us.

None of us are perfect, but all of us are forgiven if we have placed our faith in Jesus – because of what He has done..

Luke 3: 1-18. makes the following points:
V3. Baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.
V7-8 Just coming for baptism is not enough, there has to be a willingness to change. These people were very religious (’we have Abraham …’) but that did not impress John (or God) unless they began to live differently.
Vs11-14 John’s commands were not unreasonable or numerous, but would have made a difference to the people concerned and shown others that they were different.

Consider: Do you think it would be easier to live godly lives as part of a church or on our own?
One of the functions of the church is to support each other

4 Presence of The Holy Spirit
Key Verse: I baptized you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. Mark 1: 8
In Mark 1: 4-11 baptism in water comes with baptism in The Holy Spirit.

WHO IS THE HOLY SPIRIT?

John 16: 7-15 makes the following points:
V7 He is sent by God. He is a helper.
V8 He is the one who first made us aware of our need for salvation.
V13 He is the one who guides us into truth2.
V14 He glorifies Jesus (not us or our church).

The following verses also tell us about the Holy Spirit and how He will affect us as individuals and as a church:

Acts 2: 17-18 (Revelation).
Romans 8: 14 (Guidance).
Romans 8: 16 (Assurance that we are God’s children and He is our Father).
Romans 8: 26 (Teaches us how to pray).
1 Corinthians 12: 13 (Makes us part of the church).
Galatians 5: 22-23 (Fruits).
Ephesians 5: 18-20 (Gratitude and Praise).
2 Timothy 3: 16 (Author of Scripture).

The Bible says that the church is like a body. God has equipped us with gifts of service so that we each have a different, but significant, role to play. Romans 12: 1-8 speaks about the different abilities which God has given to us to use.

5 Public Confession of Faith
Key Verse: You have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. 1 Timothy 6: 12
Baptism is a public proclamation of faith. That is why we hold it as part of a morning service to which anyone may come.
